Avoid Overfeeding
We all want to spoil our pups, but when it comes to providing a healthy diet, overfeeding is not so much a reward as it is a potential health risk. Overfeeding can cause health concerns including joint problems and even a greater vulnerability to cancer. That’s why we highly recommend you follow your food manufacturer’s portion recommendations, and consult your veterinarian if you have questions particular to your pup. Feeding high-quality food in only the correct quantities can keep them physically fit. If you want to treat your pups, think vegetables and fruit rather than processed treats that come in a plastic bag. Try raw slices of carrots, bell peppers, and cucumbers. Apple slices, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are also safe for your dog and may become their favorite healthy snack.
Food Types
Do:
- Treat your dog only occasionally with human food like scrambled eggs, veggies, fruit, and cottage cheese or cooked beef bones from your local butcher.
Don’t:
- Use dog foods with corn, soy, or wheat. Feed your dog (most) human foods (see exceptions above).
- Treat your dog with poultry bones — they can splinter and hurt your dog.
